In August 1894,Mr. Aitken on behalf of the

School Committee reported that Mr.J.D.Humphreys had consented

to act as Manager of the School, and asked for a grant of

$300 from the grant-in-aid vote. With this request the Govern-

ment complied and the School was placed on the list of grant-

in-aid schools. In December of the same year Mr. Cooke, Honorary

Secretary to the School Committee, applied for the appointment

of a Head Master to be paid by the Government and offered to

forego the grant-in-aid in consideration of such appointment

being made. He further requested that the maintenance of the

School buildings should be undertaken by Government in lieu

of a Special donation, offered (privately apparently) by Sir

W. Robinson. The Govt. replied that it was unable to accede to

the above requests but probably upon some private repre-

sentation made to Sir W. Robinson of which there is no record,

the services of Mr.Jones of Queen's College were lent to the

Committee to enable the school to be carried on until the 31st

March 1895. At the end of February, 1895,Mr. Cooke addressed the

Government in regard to arrangements for carrying on the

School after the 31st.March, 1895, and suggested its conversion

into a Government School. The Government declined to accede to
